Opus Mosaics make decorative objects for the home, such as the mirrors, tables and panels that can be found elsewhere in this brochure. We also carry out 'installations', by which we mean mosaics applied to floors or walls, indoors or out. On this page we illustrate this side of our work. We have chosen as an example the 'Millennium Mosaic' that we designed and made to commission, for the Haslemere Educational Museum in Surrey, England.
Opus Mosaics were asked to design a new floor for the museum porch, to mark the new Millennium and to be inspired by the museum's Peasant Art collection. We chose to base the design on the intricate knot-work pattern featured on a three hundred year old foot-warmer.
The Millennium Mosaic itself consisted of 10,000 pieces, everyone of which was cut and positioned by hand. It received its official opening in February 2001.
Installations such as the Millennium Mosaic are an ideal way to make a distinctive and permanent impact in a public place, corporate building or the home. The flexibility of the medium means that it is possible to reproduce a particular motif such as a company logo or a town's coat of arms. Equally, a design can be chosen for the home that reflects a personal interest such as nature, music or sport.
