This model is a scale model of the RNLI's first nationwide fast lifeboat, the WAVENEY class..
This is our company's sixth, full-scale model boat kit, we have spent many hundreds of careful hours in developing this large attractive model into a superb scale subject we are happy with. If you read and build this kit to the instructions and drawings supplied herewith we are confident that you will be delighted with your finished model.
If you are a beginner or expert we feel sure your model will look as good (probably better) than ours.
The boat was originally designed in early 1960 in America for the USCG, prototype production and trials were started in 1962, this the design passed successfully. It was in 1963 that the RNLI started to look at this fast lifeboat design. After a visit to the USA delivery was taken in May of that year of a prototype vessel (in fact the 28th. boat of the class to be built in the USA). As was RNLI policy she was numbered 44-001. Manufacture of the 22 No. production boats started in 1965 and finished in 1982, a strangely long period of time.
Our model is based on archive drawings and photo's off the Hartlepool lifeboat 'RNLB The Scout' she entered service in 1977, after 20 years service she left to go into fleet reserve on the 29-9-97. She was then sold out of service on the 18-11-97 to ADES (the Uruguay lifeboat service,) for service at Base No.1 Puerto del Buceo, a suburb of the capital, Montevideo, here she was named ADES 16. No. 14-016. Our model is shown (we are told) as in August 1994, she is correct for this date only having already been refitted several times.
There was a class total of 22 Waveneys built, all to the same basic design, we feel that with some research you could easily base your model on one of these others, beware though! There are differences! We are confident our kit can be altered to suit any of this class of Lifeboat, we are also sure you will prove us right. In fact, with a little research a decent model could also be made off the USCG, Canadian or Swedish versions.
