A great variety of places can be walked to by choosing from one of the many footpaths leading from Brackenside. One of these is approximately a 4 mile walk, which leads to Roughtin Linn, a beautiful waterfall and cave and cup and ring markings dating from 2000BC. Details of further footpaths are available whilst on Brackenside.

There are also many places that can be easily cycled to from Brackenside. In Lowick (3 miles) there are 2 shops, a post office, a cafe and 2 pubs. This is an easy ride and a wonderful place to visit. There is a local watermill, called Heatherslaw Mill, which can be easily cycled to. In the same direction, there is a model village, Ford. Another picturesque local village is Etal, joined to Heatherslaw by an exciting steam train.

Many attractions can be visited by car at not too great a distance from Brackenside. These include the well-known ‘Holy Island’ or Lindisfarne and the famous border hills, the Cheviots. Alternatively, you could drive to one of the local beaches, castles or National Trust Houses.

The background photograph is taken on a beach known locally as ‘whale beach’, a vast expanse of sand with very few people. Not for nothing are the Northumbrian beaches often described as “the best in Britain”.
