This recently converted self catering holiday cottage was originally the Village Blacksmith Shop, probably built in the early 1800’s, and more latterly used as a carpenters/joiners workshop.

Situated 17 miles North of the wonderful City of York, 6 miles from Helmsley and the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, The Smithy lies just 2 miles from the picturesque village of Hovingham.

The beautiful and historic sites of Castle Howard, Nunnington Hall, Helmsley, and Rievaulx Abbey all lie within 6 miles of Manor Cottage. In Helmsley you can visit Duncombe Park, the home of Lord and Lady Feversham, Helmsley Castle, and the Walled Garden which is being restored.

Other nearby places of interest include Eden Camp, Mount Grace Priory, The World of James Herriot, Ryedale Folk Museum, Beck Isle Museum in Pickering and don’t miss a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway. This 18-mile line runs between Pickering and Grosmont and takes you into the centre of “Heartbeat” country, and through the spectacular North Yorkshire Moors.

Should you decide to travel east you pass through some beautiful countryside and gradually make your way across to the spectacular Heritage Coast where you can follow Captain Cook’s trail and visit Filey, Scarborough, Whitby & Robin Hood’s Bay.

From Stonegrave itself there are a number of good walks, and we have our very own historic Minster. There is a picturesque 9-hole golf course at Gilling Castle.

Driving south from Stonegrave to York, there is easy access to the various Park ‘n Ride schemes which will take you into the centre of this most beautiful and ancient city. Amongst its many attractions are York Minster, The Yorkshire Museum, Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, Fairfax House, Jorvik Viking Centre, the famous York Castle Museum and the National Railway Museum. The city offers a wonderful shopping experience and McArthur Glen Designer Outlet lies just south of York off the ring road.

There are a number of very good pubs that you can visit for your evening meal, all within easy driving distance of The Smithy and we will be happy to make any bookings you may require.
