FLY FISHING IN MONTANA, USA
I normally only need a few nymph patterns, most of which can
be fished in Tandem with any of the others. Important patterns are
Beaded Pheasent Tail Nymphs (sizes 16-22)
Brassies (sizes 18 - 22)
Bitch Creeks (sizes 6 - 12)
Gold Ribbed Hares Ears (sizes 14 - 22)
Dry flies must consist of Baetis emerger patterns and BWOs in
small sizes.
Do not enter Montana without some Griffiths Gnats (size 16 - 24).
Elk Hair Caddis (sizes 14-16)
Adams Parachute (size 14)
Stimulators (size 10 - 16)
Finally for those times when no hatch is going on I add a
handful of streamers
Natural Zonkers
Black or Olive Woolly Buggers
Muddler Minnows - Fred Hoover
COLORADO HOOK SIZE
Great website! Ive learned a lot just reading the descriptions of the few flies
I've seen so far. I live in Colorado, and typically fish the South Platte fro
rainbow and brown trout. Small flies are the rule - rarely anything bigger than
a size 22. Thanks take care, Doug Whittenberg, Littleton. CO
FLY FISHING IN THE CASCADE MOUNTAINS, WASHINGTON STATE, USA
Thought I'd send you my ten favorite flies. I live in the state of Washington USA, I'm on the west side of
the Cascade Mountains and our climate is probably a lot like what I
understand England's is, lots of rain and for the most part very moderate
Temperatures. My wife and both work and have built a retirement home in the
Cascade foothills on the West side. The weather is quite different there,
Very warm in the summer and very cold in the winter and lots of rain or
snow. I like to fish Lakes more than rivers or streams. Most of the streams
here are very small, narrow and overgrown. There are some large rivers also
and I'll try them in retirement. (about 2 years from now) Mostly I have been
fishing Lakes in the Cascade mountains, average elevation is about 4500 Feet
and a few in the lowlands around Tacoma, around 500 to 700 feet in
elevation. The flies I use most are:
(Nymphs) Gold Ribbed Hares Ear,
Telico,
Damsel,
Dragon Fly,
Zug Bug.
(Dry) Adams,
Black Gnat,
Blue Dunns,
Elk Hair
Caddis,
Sizes10 thru 18.
Have a great
Day!

TOP TEN LIST
I fish for just about anything that swims, but mainly steelhead, trout and Bass.
My top ten flies might include:-
BASS: Dahlberg Divers in different colors, but mainly deerhair grey in hook
sizes 6 or 8, sorted swimmers that do not dive too much like muddlers, Wool
bodied streamers size 6, 8 and 10 - no names yet. (they are just different colored
wool tied onto a hook).
TROUT: Lots of Adams and Cahills. Currently experimenting with quill patterns
down to size 24 if my eyesight will hold out.
STEELHEAD: Currently experimenting with simple spey patterns, mostly from John
Shewey's book Spey and Dee Flies, except I do not put a tent hackle on top (too
difficult for me). I put wool up there I guess I like wool. Thanks

NORTHERN ITALY FLY FISHING
Dear Mr Moore, Thank you for the quick delivery of my order. I just got it some
days ago and I'm already very excited for using them. As you've been asking me
for the place I go fishing. I would like to explain. Usually I go fishing in the
mountain torrents in North Italy close to Turin. Normally I use small quantities
of flies but always dry flies. In those rivers it is necessary to search for
fish. Like that I often use the Royal Wulff on a #14, The Royal Coach man on #16
or #14, Wickham's Fancy on #12 or #14 and other types of flies, but my preferred
is the March brown fly. Many Regards Ernesto Fiora, Italy

NEW ZEALAND'S TONGARIRO RIVER
For winter fishing (June to September) we mainly use Hare and
Coppers on a long shank hook size 10 with full length wraps of lead and a 4 mm
tungsten bead on a 15ft 6lb flurocarbon leader then a dropper of about 3 foot to
a size 14-16 Pheasant Tail / glow bug / prince nymph / or hare and copper, but
to the point the flies aren't that important, but the way you present them.
Summer fishing on the other hand is a totally different kettle of fish, fly selection and presentation are very important, fishing long 4lb leaders and light weight nymphs or dry flies. We use a large selection of dries everything from size 18 Adams right up to size 8 Royal Wulffs and Cicada's depending on the time of season and weather depends on what works. The up side is you can see the fish in summer clear as day, so you can see if they are turning it down or not.

FLY FISHING THE POCONOS, PENNSYLVANIA, MONTANA & WYOMING
In the Poconos early season, Woolly Buggers, Muddlers and Leeches on #4,
#6 and #8 hooks. the Woolly Buggers are black and olive with some flashabou in
the tail. Also I will fish pheasant tails #16, Gold Ribbed hares Ears # 12 to 14
and Princes Nymphs #10 to #12. Often I have two on at a time. By May the hatches
are more in evidence and I use Blue Wing Olives #16 and #18, grey and tan caddis
#14, Hendrickson #14. Terrestrials begin to become more active and small black
and red ants #14 to #18, black beetles #10 to #12 are good. We do not have any
grasshoppers because this is not farm land but forest. The most productive fly
all year round is a #18 baetis.
In Pennsylvania, Penns creek, Fishing creek, Spring creek, and Elk Creek this is fishing to pretty predictable hatches starting with Hendricksons, gray caddis and by june Sulphurs #16 and around the end of May, the famous green drake hatch #10. Both duns and spinners just at dark. The tiny Tricos are there in the mornings for several months. These streams are in part farm country and grasshoppers are often used along with other terrestrials.
On the Big Horn River in Montana and Wyoming again #18 baetis
are good all year long. A big pale morning dun hatch is there in July and August
and later in the day a black #18 microcaddis comes on. Between hatches I use #18
Pheasant Tail Nymphs and #18 Scuds and Sow bugs.

FLY FISHING TOP TEN FOR MAINE, USA
Most of my fishing is on rivers and streams. Occasionally I'll canoe a few
ponds. Most noted are the rivers of Kennebec, Penobscot, Moose, Crooked, Rapid,
Messalonskee, Kenebago, Grand Lake Stream, Magaloway, Dead River, Kenduskeag and
Sebasticook. One of particular interest is our tri-annual trips to New
Brunswick, Canada to fish the Tobique river (hence the Thompson Special Fly)

NEW MEXICO FISHING
I fish a lot of tailwaters like the San Juan River in
New Mexico. The main flies I fish are small nymphs. WD-40s Copper Johns,
Brassies and small pheasant tails etc..I try to fish with a dropper, so I tie
something like a San Juan Worm as the first fly and then the dropper will be
something small like a 22 or 24 WD-40
I also like to fish a size 16 PMD (Pale Morning Dun) or similar (parachute often as it is easy to see) and hang a dropper on about 24" of tippet with small bead head pheasant tail. This was a killer combination in Idaho last year.
As far as a list, it is hard to do just ten but here is a try
WET = WD-40, Pheasant Tail, Cooper John, Chamois leech, Woolly Bugger, Gold
Ribbed Hares Ear, Egg Pattern
DRY= PMD, Blue Dun, Various Caddis, Grasshoppers, Humpies, Ants
I typically fish with yellow and red Humpies in size 12-18 with the most common being 14 and 16. As an attractor pattern it is amazing how well it works even when there is no hatch on. I have a friend who lives near the San Juan River which is notorious for its small flies, He rarely fishes anything other than a 16 Humpy and catches fish all day long. I may catch 15 to 20 in a day fishing wet and matching the hatch, but he will regularly catch 10-12 and never change his fly

TENNESSEE MOUNTAIN FISHING
Hi I'm Mike from the mountains of Tennessee. Around here there are two types of
Fly fishing for rainbow and brown Trout. One is fishing tail waters from dams
and the other is mountain streams. The rule is the bigger the water the smaller
the fly and the smaller the water the bigger the fly. In large tail waters we
fish size 18-20 BWO, Sulfur comparaduns and elk hair caddis. In mountain streams
we use size 10-14 orange stimulators and weighterd Goled Ribbed Hares Ear
Nymphs. The Mountain trout range from about 7-12 inches and the tail water trout
range from 12 - 30 inches. We also fish for small mouth bass in the rivers with
woolly buggers and clousers minnows. The are rare and are only found in higher
elevations and in very clean water.

MOUNTAIN FLY FISHING IN CALIFORNIA
The most productive dry fly I have found in the Sierras at high
elevations is
the the popular Royal Coachman sizes 14,16,and 18 for little brookies.
Brook trout are generally not very particular at higher elevations where there
is little fishing pressure. A few weeks ago I caught five Browns in one day on
a #16 Coachman in the head waters of the South Fork of the American River above
Lake Tahoe. The river is heavily fished so I was shocked by the results.
The Wooly Bugger( olive and brown) sizes 6- 12 work great float tubing in high
mountain lakes especially in the Autumn. Zugbugs, beaded pheasant tail
nymphs,
terrestrial imitations such as Joe's Hopper, Red and brown worm imitation flies
are
killer on small streams in the Sierras as well as in ponds and lakes in
the
Sacramento Valley for Sunfish.
James Mamola. CA,
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, NEVADA & WESTERN MONTANA FISHING
I fish Northern California, Nevada & Western Montana at various times of the
year. My 'goto' attractor fly is the Trude, usually size 10. It rides high and
is easy for my old eyes to see. Other choices are Royal Wulff and Humpy.
Parachute Adams and Elk Hair Caddis sizes 14 & 16 ( I put them as a dropper
at about 14 inches to a larger fly I can see). When using a single dry fly I
usually have a small dropper at about 14 inches to a larger fly I can see). My
favourite nymphs are Princes, Gold Ribbed Hares Ears, Birds Nest, Copper Johns
and Zug Bug. I use a bead head where appropriate but then will always have a
small non bead head dropper.

7) My father had a lot of luck with Streamers (Lures) but I didn't even get a
nibble on them!
I went fishing this last Saturday and caught a good sized rainbow on one of
your Olive GRHE. He absolutely slammed the fly and I had a hard time
releasing him. It is nice to see a fly that fools the fish that well! When
I finally did get him loose he held right at my feet for about five minutes
before he swam off. What fun! Thanks for the great flies! Dan Ward in
NORTH CAROLINA - ONE FISHERMAN'S ASSESSMENT
Overall North Carolina's trout waters are comparatively small and shallow and
not so nutrient rich as the chalk streams of Southern England or the classic
limestone streams further north in the USA. As a result there are fewer insects
and the hatch is less defined. That is not to say that there isn't hatching
going on...its just that the size of the hatch is often insufficient to trigger
the surface feeding frenzy that may be seen elsewhere. For that reason the
Carolina fly fisherman nearly always gets his best results from wet flies and
nymphs.
I keep several small fly boxes stocked and ready to slip into a pocket. The box that sees most use contains only nymphs...mostly beaded Gold Ribbed Hares Ears and Prince's nymphs with a few Zugbugs and stonefly nymphs for good measure. In North Carolina's trout waters I find there to be the most consistent patterns. You can expect to catch fish with them on just about any occasion.
Next in use is a mixed box containing Woolly Buggers, some Matuka streamers and a selection of dry flies. Prominent among the dry flies are the female Adams and the Yallerhammer. A light or yellow colour seems to be a decided plus in dark waters of many mountain streams. I round this box out with Blue Winged Olives in various sizes along with some elk hair caddis, a few miniscule Tricos, plus several black ants.
Then there is the third box. Here you will find the overflow...sulphurs, March Browns, Hendricksons, PMD's, Royal Wulffs etc..predominately flies that would be contenders for a top ten lists in many areas plus a few one offs that I acquired over time. But the only time any of these come into play for me is the rare occasions when there is enough of a hatch to match, or when nothing else is working and I have the urge to try something different.

FISHING THE NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAINS & GREAT
SMOKEY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK
Adrian: Thanks for the note. I found everything I was
looking for on your page. It is very nicely put together. I fish the large
and small rivers and streams in western North Carolina mountains along the
Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina state lines. I also spend a fair amount
of time in streams along the southern boundries of the Great Smokey Mountain
National Park. This time of year water levels are high and trout are responding
to larger dry fly patterns (12-16), which is why I prefer the Adams and the
parachute patterns. In late May and on into July I'll turn to midge
patterns in sizes 18-20 and streamers. Probably should go on down to size
22 on the midges but my eye sight isn't what it use to be. Thanks for
taking care of my order. I'm looking forward to putting your flies into
some of our wonderful mountain water. I'll let you know how they perform.
By the way, we use a female Adams (parachute) throughout all seasons with some
success.
Fred Van Horn
GREAT LAKES SPRING STEELHEAD FLIES
I have not really got a top ten but here are some pointers. Most situations are
best dealt with by dead drifted nymphs and egg patterns, but streamers are also
effective. Bright red or chartreuse traditional hairwings work well on Hook Size
6 to 8. Avoid bulky winged patterns which are hard to get down to the bottom and
stay there. I love using the good old Woolly Bugger in black, Olive, or brown on
a size 10 - 6 hook. All the salmon egg patterns work great tied on short shank
wide gape hooks in fluorescent red, orange, yellow and chartreuse.
Andy Wood.
KENTUCKY FLYFISHING
I fish primarily for trout and small mouthed bass in streams in the Cumberland
River tailwater below Wolf Creek Dam. My favorite flies are
Princes (beaded and not) hook size 16-20
Pheasant Tails (beaded and not) flashbacks hook size 16-20
Hares Ear (beaded and not) natural and olive hook size 16-20
Woolly Buggers (beaded and not) hook size 4-10
Scuds and sowbugs hook size 16-18
Wet flies such as Partridge and Green hook size 14-20
Olive and Black Chicago flies (beaded) hook size 6-10
Wulffs and parachutes

MONCKS CORNER, SC, USA
I fish for bream, bluegills, shellcrackers and many other
members of the sun fish family. Think of them like a warmwater brook or rainbow

fishing. My top 10 flies/patterns in no particular order are:
1. Muddler minnow size 10 or 8
2. Adams size 12
3. Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymphs size 12
4. Pheasant Tail Nymphs size 12
5. Royal Wulff size 12

FLY FISHING INDIANA - MICHIGAN STATE LINES
My home waters are on a small sand and gravel bottomed stream
located near the Indiana-Michigan state lines at approximately 41.7 degrees
north and 85.2 degrees west. It is called the Pigeon River. Rainbow Trout,
Smallmouth Bass and Brown Trout are my pursuits of passion on this stream. My
fishing partner and I also fish the many fine trout streams in Michigan.
The Adams, Elk Hair Cadis, Light Hendrickson, Blue Winged Olives and Brown and White Bi-visible are my dry flies of choice. Olive Wooly Buggers, Black Leeches. The Prince Nymph, Gold-ribbed Hare's Ear, Pheasant Tail or any of the Peacock nymphs work well on the Pigeon River. In late August and early September, I use a 7 foot long, 3 weight full flex rod rigged a 9 foot, 4x tapered leader with a large green bodied hopper and a tung-head Pheasant Tail nymph dropper. This combination is especially effective, prompting explosive strikes from under the cut banks and out of the deep pockets.
Late September starts the Salmon and Steelhead runs. Egg patterns, Egg Sucking Leeches and Black Wooly Buggers are my favorites. The 7 and 8 weight rods are the rods of choice except for the most experienced anglers. I usually use a 5 or 6 weight mid-flex rod.

MIDWESTERN USA FISHING
My top ten flies are:
1. 1/100th ounce Chenille minijig with or without a marabou tail in a variety of
colors like white, black, yellow, green, chartreuse and brown. they catch
everything on a fly rod including trout, bluegill, crappie and bass.
2. Black weighted nymph, hook size 12 and 14. My most consistent trout nymph.
3. Parachute Adam's size 16 through to 22, good mayfly and gray midge imitation.
4. Renegade size 16 through to 20, a good general attractor for Midwestern
trout.
5. Crackleback blue and gold, size 12 - 16, another good general attractor for
Midwestern trout.
6. Tungsten beadhead zebra midge nymph red and black, size 18 - 22, good
tailwater nymph for trout
7. Black Elk Hair Caddis, size 14 - 18, the only consistent caddis Species for
Missouri
8. Royal Wulff size 10 to 12, excellent attractor for cutthroat when I get to
Idaho
9. Chernobyl Hopper size 10 works in Midwest and Montana

FLY FISHING COLORADO
In Colorado I mostly fish the South Platte, at Deckers,
Cheeseman Canyon and 11 Mile Res. Also the Arkansas, the Frying Pan and Colorado
River. I have most successful with Flashback Pheasant Tails 18-20, RS2's 18-22,
San Juan Worms, Bar Emergers 18-22 and Miracle Nymphs 20-22. The Dries I like
are Blue Winged Olives, and mostly Adams and Caddis in 16-18.

MIDWEST FLY FISHING
Here is my top 10 of this year, pretty much based on production
of "hits" in no particular order
1.Black nosed dace streamer size 6 - Steelhead were hitting this like mad in the
beginning of October. Nothing else worked.
2.No name pattern size 2-10 - White marabou streamer with red marabou throat and
silver tinsel body. Good for all great lakes salmon and it also picked up many
Largemouth Bass
3.Foam bodied hoppers with indicators and rubber legs size 6 - ideal for trout
in Montana and Yellowstone
4.Parachute hopper with red body - ideal for trout in Montana and Yellowstone
5.Egg sucking leach size 6 & 8 - I used a purple bodied, red headed ESL to
nab fish
6.No name wet fly size 12 - Simple olive chenille body, black hackle and wings
made of the same material as a Light Cahill. Nailed many juvenile bass this
year. Probably would work well on panfish.
7. Popsicle a marabou streamer size 6 (only size I could get) - again for
steelhead and salmon.
8. Glo bugs size 2-6 for salmon/size 12 and 10 for steelhead (although both will
take either) - all colors although Chartreuse has gotten the most hits this
year.
9.King Fisher Fly Shops Sculpin imitation - Tied with two triangle pieces of
rabbit skin/fur glued back toi back so that you get a white under belly. Some
sort of duck breast feathers are used as pectoral fins, with a bit of red for
gills and large black bead eyes. Hook is inverted. This fly looks awesome
underwater.
10. Black large sculpin size 2-0 - A variation of the Muddler Minnow huge and
black with a spun deer hair head. Got a lot of looks and one hit from a huge
male Chinook which took my fly and all my leader.

is on the surface.
2. Comparadun/sparkle dun sizes 14 - 18 variety of colors for trout in general.
Tied on 100, 101 or equiv alent. Definite go to fly for me.
3. Klinkhammer trout emerger, used to imitate mayfly, caddis and on occasion
midge emergers on both lake and streams, variety of colors, mostly woven
patterns but dubbed bodies (touch dubbing for midges) size 12 - 18. Tied on TMC
2487, 2488 or equivalent. Hi vis pattern as well as other versions of the post
using white antron, pearl, krystal flash.

rusty brown, yellow sizes 14 - 20 TMC 101 hook for trout on all streams.
5. Rolled Muddler sizes 6 -10 natural with silver, gold, chartreuse, brown,
black fished in both river and costal for cuttroats, coho salmon, rainbows, hok

6. Bunny Leach- Heavy weighted 2-6 4x hook stillwater pattern for big rainbows
down deep. Fished with type 5+ sinking lines and stripped very very fast. Big
trout catcher 22-30 inch rainbows. Colours primarily black and olive but I also
tye them in bright colours (chartreuse, yellow) mottled natural colours, maroon
etc... lightly weighted when fishing for big pike sizes 3/0 - 4 and fished just
under the surface.
7. Princes Nymph size 12 TMC 200R (like the look of it) and TMC2302 tied with
different colours of dyed peacock herl however natural is still standard. Use it
as a searching pattern on lakes and rivers
8. Woolly Bugger 3X hook size 10 tyed very sparse, dubbed body of seal olive
brown and black, hackle is stripped on one side and tied with maybe 4 - 5 wraps
at most sparse sparse krystal flash for accent in tail and as rib. ideal for
stillwater rainbows.
9, 10, 11 and on and on are Chronomids - TMC 2457, 2487 (size 18's and smaller)
2302 size 8 - 20, tied in an endless arra of colours using rayon floss, stretch
flex, lagartum minibraid, coloured thread, larva lace, larva glass tubing filled
with mineral water etc... I have over 2000 Chronomid flies (maybe 25 patterns
each in lots of colours and sizes) in my boat box - larva, emerging, pupa,
snowcone, buzzer versions, about 2/3 have beads.

FLY FISHING ON THE OLDMAN RIVER, ALBERTA, CANADA
In June the stonefly hatch is coming off the water followed by the mayflies in
July and August. September brings caddis up until October. Grasshoppers, beetles
and ants work well in the Summer and early Autumn. I like using Bitch Creeks,
Golden Stone, Kaufmanns's Black Stone and Montanas in the early part of the
season as stonefly imitations. Mountain whitefish and trout are attracted to
these offerings. In the summer I use large attractors when there are no hatches
in progress, my favorites are Yellow humpy, Red humpy, Orange stimulator, and
Royal Trude. Dave's hoppers are best in late July and August during the
Grasshopper hatch. I use beaded princes and Gold Ribbed Hares Ear nymphs on a
2-3 foot dropper tied underneath the stimulator dry fly or the Hopper to
increase the the odds on a bite. This is not only effective rainbows and
Whitefish but I have caught a number of Cutthroat as well.
Most of the mayfly hatches occur in the evening, late in the day when the wind has calmed down. make sure you have the following flies in your fly box to cater for these hatches:Blue winged olive, Mosquito, Royal Wulff, Sofa Pillow, Elk Hair Caddis and Goddards Caddis.
During the day I like to swim streamers downstream. The patterns
that work well up here are sculpins, marabou muddlers, muddler minnows and
zonkers. I find adding a bit of weight to the nose works really well to get them
down the to the river bottom. A small split shot is all you need.

LAKE ONTARIO TRIBUTARY FISHING, CANADA
We fish for steelheads that run up from Lake Ontario into various tributaries.
These are spectacular fish that average 7-12 lbs. These steelhead runs are now
larger than those on the Pacific coast. The medium brown woolly buggers are one
of the top flies to take these fish on. Because of the small size of the river
weswing them on short 5ft polyleaders. The takes are usually arm jolting.
Various classic nymphs like Gold Ribbed Hares Ear and Pheasant tail nymphs are
your standard flies. One of the most effective is the Welsh Diawl Bach (little
Devil) Nymph. One of my fishing mates is Welsh. He discovered one year when the
fishing got to be a little tough that a small standard Diawl Bach was just the
fly needed to get them back on the bite. fished in the slower deeper pools on a
light tippet can induce savage strikes. I guess that is why it is called the
little devil.

concentrate mainly on the speckled and rainbows. A strong secondary interest is
Atlantic Salmon. We have a number of first clas salmon rivers here on the island
and the are excellent as for the last three years the commercial fishing
restrictions in Iceland really did us wonders.

A MINNESOTA FISHING GUIDES CHOICE OF FLIES
For trout I mainly fish stocked rainbows and browns in some local streams here
in Northern Minnesota, as well as a few lakes that hold them. Once in awhile
I'll head to the Great Lakes area and fish Kamloops and Browns. My real passion
is chasing blue gills with a flyrod. There's nothing like catching a 9 inch
'gill on a light rod and a popper. Bass, pike and crappie are also included in
my targeted species, but bluegill is my mainstay. For them I fish the local
lakes here in Beltrami County, MN. As far as my top ten flies, here they are
1. Clousers Minnow hook size 8
2. Popper Flies hook size 2 for bass hook size 10 for Bluegils
3. Mosquito Wet Flies hook size 12 - 14
4. Woolly Worm hook size 10
5. Golden Stonefly Nymph hook size 10
6. Hopper Dry Flies hook size 12

TAILWATER FISHING IN IDAHO & OREGON
I fish tailwaters in Idaho and Oregon for browns and Rainbows. I use Nymphs and

WESTERN USA FLIES
It was tough to limit my selection to ten. I use these flies with success on
rivers in North Georgia, Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina like the
Hiawassee, Chattooga, Tellico and Davidson. They all seem to work very well
1. Light Cahill - Easily my most favorite and productive fly. I usually use in
size 14 - 16
2. Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph - My favorite nymph size 18. I like to fish
convergences, pools and small rapids with this fly.
3. Muddler Minnows size 14 - a Solid producer when fishing below the surface
4. Tellico - size 14 or 16 - Named after a river in Eastern Tennessee/Western
North Carolina and I can see why. It really works on that river.
5. Adam's Irresistible size 18 - just like the look of this fly. It produces as
well.
6. Brown Cricket size 12 - I like to use these when I am fishing in heavily
covered areas. I caught a 20" wild Rainbow on the Chattooga River last
Sunday with a cricket.
7. Black ant size 16 - Simply kills them in the summer
8. Mickey Finn size 8. I basically use it like a spinning lure. It works when I
do not want to use rooster tails
9. Royal Wulff size 12 - I always seem to catch fish
10. Cinnamon Sedge Dry size 16 - a beautiful fly

Shadow, Silver and Black, Sunray Shadow. In tube, size 1/2"
-11/2" There are also other custom made flies, but it seems like the ones
colored orange/red or green or brown depending on the watercolor are best at
daytime. And gray/black/silver are best at night.

FLY FISHING MIDDLE FINLAND
Winter fishing is very limited because of the very cold weather
but when we do go we use streamers like Muddler Minnows and Zonkers. In Spring I
use stonefly Larva and adult imitations as well as Muddler Minnows and Zonkers.
In Summer I use Sedge imitations, pupa and larva, Nalle Puh (for dry) and small
fry streamers. In the Fall I use Hydropsyche Larva, red tag or equivalent,
leeches, Muddler Minnows and Zonkers.

SOUTHERN
FINLAND FLY FISHING
The flies I use depends a lot when and what I'm fishing for . I live in Southern
Finland and I have a big variety of different type of water here. I mostly fish
in the sea (the Finnish Gulf I believe you call it) where the target is sea
trout. There I use streamers that imitate Baltic herring hook size 2-4.
Sometimes I go for shrimp imitations of so called fantasy flies. Jock Scott
types of tube flies. Then we have some large lakes which are quite shallow,
there we fish for grayling and salmon. Small dry flies of all sorts, ants and
other terrestrials in sizes 8-12. We have a couple of good salmon rivers here in
southern Finland, for example the Kymi river where salmon and seatrout still
spawn from the sea. There I fish with reddish or dark tube flies and large
double or trebles.
