BOOBY NYMPHS
The Booby fly-fishing trout catching fly pattern is the Dolly Parton of the fishing world. You can instantly see how it got its name. Gordon Frazer, the British designer of this fly, wanted to add buoyancy to a standard marabou tailed nymph. He wanted to have the ability to float nymphs off the riverbed and lake bottom.

There are now many different methods to fish a Booby Fly. They all catch Rainbow and Brown Trout. Choose the method that works best for the water you are fishing. I like tying on a booby nymph fly on the end of a fast sinking line with a short leader. The length of the leader could be as short as a few feet. I cast out and let the line sink down to the bottom. Because of the foam balls the Booby nymph does not lie on the gravel or mud on the bottom. It floats just above it forcing the leader to rise in the column of water just like a nymph of juvenile fish heading for the surface. The fly is suspended upwards from the tip of the heavier sinking fly line. It works well in locations that have problem with weed hook ups. Now many flyfishermen leave the line in this position letting the current in the water to move the booby fly naturally to suggest movement and life. Other fly fishermen with less patience will retrieve pause retrieve pause after the cast. On the retrieve, the booby nymph fly dips down but on the pause it rises again. It mimics the darting movement of a juvenile fish. This is technique is known as the 'bottom-up' method.
