Do your IT department’s plans closely match the priorities
you’ve set for your business? If not, you are likely to be missing big opportunities.
In some companies IT strategy is an industry itself. People labour for months to produce a glossy document on
which the ink is barely dry before it’s time to start the process again... Other companies have a budgeting process that is called strategy. Yet others use the strategy to justify things they were doing
anyway. Strategy is probably the most abused term in the IT lexicon.
IT strategy, above all else, is about aligning your IT investment with your business strategy. It should be a two-way process.
Technology options should inform and enhance your business strategy. Creating an IT strategy should be at least as revealing to senior management as it is to the IT team.
You need a strategy process that is
short, sharp and enlightening. Don’t take chances with it. It is a powerful lever for your business.
